Winter holidays in a holiday home in Carinthia: a unique daily rhythm

At Ebner 1822, only three private individuals are represented. Natural houses made from wood, straw, and clay. The morning belongs to the individual’s own house and begins without going to the breakfast room or having a set time.

In the morning, we bring the breakfast basket directly to the house. After that, the guests decide for themselves: go out early, go back to bed, stay at the table for a long time, or first see if there is new snow overnight.

This freedom is especially valuable in the winter. The weather can change, as can your own desire for exercise. In your own holiday home, you don’t have to commit yourself in the morning; it remains both a starting point and a retreat.

Winter days in the Nock Mountains

Ebner 1822 lies in the upper Gurktal valley on a sunny plateau at around 1,000 meters. On clear winter days, the view extends south to the Karawanken Mountains. When there is snow, small winter rounds are organized from the paths around the farm. Sometimes a walk through the forest or over the open fields is enough to consciously perceive the cold air and the light.

For longer winter hikes, cross-country skiing, skiing, or a visit to a thermal spa, the Nock Mountains offer various options. Bad Kleinkirchheim, the Turracher Höhe, the Falkert, the Hochrindl, and other winter areas are accessible by car. Which trails, cross-country tracks, and facilities are open depends on the weather and snow conditions and should be checked up-to-date before setting off.

Ski resorts are destinations for excursions, not a backdrop

Ebner 1822 is not directly located on a ski slope. The ski resorts, winter hiking trails, and thermal baths of the Nock Mountains are destinations for a day trip. After that, the path leads back to the farm and into the private nature house.

Even snow on the farm cannot be guaranteed for every travel date. Our location at around 1,000 meters brings good conditions, but a winter holiday is not just about white meadows. Especially on snowless days, you can see whether a house can stand up to the test even without a postcard backdrop.

A natural house that withstands even on grey days

In winter, materials become particularly noticeable. Wood brings a warm surface to the rooms. The densely packed straw forms the strong insulation layer of the building shell. Clay can buffer short-term fluctuations in humidity and gives the walls their matte, artisan-crafted surface.

At Ebner 1822, these materials were not subsequently added as design elements. They form the houses from the ground up. The diffusion-free construction, the wall heating system, and the fireplace stove work together in this way. After a day outside, therefore, not only is a heated room waiting. A whole house is waiting: with warm walls, a large table and a freestanding bathtub with a view outside. Wet jackets can be dried, the shoes are on the wardrobe and the evening can take place wherever you want.

Heat that doesn't need to be staged

A fireplace is included in all three natural houses. It is not a decorative feature for the photo, but it can actually be used. The firewood is ready.

The primary heat is provided by the wall heater. On winter evenings, the stove adds to that warmth that is not only felt at room temperature. You can hear the wood, see the fire, and may even sit at the table longer than planned.

The private Hydrosoft cabin adds this warmth and can then be used when it’s convenient. Much has been prepared without having to create a program.

Breakfast basket at the door, dinner at your own discretion

The breakfast basket is part of the stay at Ebner 1822. Regional and organic products, water, coffee, tea, juices, and fresh eggs from the farm are already included. Breakfast is served in the in-house kitchen – early, late, or in several stages.

The journey to eat is then short. But even more important is that it does not create any obligation. A winter evening can taste like a carefully cooked menu – or like bread, cheese and an open bottle of wine on your own table.

A winter holiday at Ebner 1822 is perfect for people who prefer their own home to a hotel room. For guests who enjoy being outdoors but don’t need to collect as many ski kilometers every day.
