Hammock by the natural pond at Ebner 1822 as a peaceful alternative to a hotel holiday

Holiday home or hotel holiday: where can you find more peace and quiet?

The morning often tells you more about a holiday than any list of amenities. In a hotel, the first tray might already be rattling down the corridor, a door slams shut, and voices drift up from the breakfast room. In a private holiday home, you open the front door, step out barefoot, and feel the cool morning air on your skin. Dew still lies over the meadows. From the pond, you can hear the quiet splashing of the water.

On the question Holiday home or hotel holiday – where can you find more peace and quiet? This is about more than just two different types of accommodation. It's about how a holiday day should begin. And how much of your own rhythm remains.

A good hotel can be wonderful: with attentive service, a generous breakfast, a spa, a bar, and the pleasant feeling of not having to worry about a thing. A private holiday home offers a different form of relaxation. Here, not just a room, but an entire house belongs to you for a few days. Time can be set according to what feels good at the moment.

Holiday home or hotel holiday: quiet has many sides

Peace doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. Some long for silence. Others don't want to have to make any decisions for a few days. Still others wish for good care, but with as little fuss as possible.

In a hotel, many things are part of a cohesive whole: the lobby, the breakfast room, the path to the wellness area, the terrace, and sometimes even the sunbathing lawn. This can be pleasant – especially for people who appreciate company, choice, and a comprehensive offering. Good hotels do manage to create opportunities for retreat. Nevertheless, you remain part of a larger operation with fixed times, established routines, and unavoidable encounters.

A holiday home begins where this shared backdrop ends. Behind the front door, there isn't a single room waiting, but your own little living space. No lift goes past. No one moves into the neighbouring room late at night. In the morning, you don't have to look for a seat at breakfast.

This doesn't mean a holiday home is always the better choice. Those who want to choose from several menus daily, book activities, and still sit at the hotel bar in the evening will probably feel more comfortable in a good hotel.

On the other hand, those who appreciate a leisurely breakfast in a bathrobe, a long afternoon with a book, and dinner without watching the clock will find something valuable in their own home: peace and quiet that doesn't need to be organised.

Privacy does not mean seclusion

Privacy is often confused with loneliness. However, it primarily means being able to decide for yourself when closeness is pleasant and when you prefer to be on your own.

In a personally run holiday home, both can come together. At Ebner 1822, the breakfast basket is brought to your accommodation. After that, each guest decides for themselves when to brew the coffee, cut the bread, and open the front door. There's no set breakfast time dictating the start of the day.

Anyone planning an excursion will receive personal recommendations from locals. Those who prefer to spend their day at the natural pond, on their own terrace, or with a book don't need to explain themselves. Our idea of hospitality is attentive but discreet: we are there when we are needed – and give you space when peace is more important.

This freedom can be particularly beneficial for people whose daily lives are characterised by appointments, conversations, screens and constant availability. On holiday, there's no schedule to adhere to. An afternoon where seemingly nothing happens is not a missed opportunity. Perhaps it is exactly what was missing.

More time together in your own home

Even as a couple, you experience a holiday in a holiday home differently. In a hotel, you often imperceptibly orient yourself to your surroundings: breakfast times, other guests or the question of whether a sun lounger is still free in the quiet area.

In your own home, there's more space for a shared rhythm. You have long breakfasts, cook something small, or let Barbara spoil you. You take a walk through the meadows, lie down again, read, talk, or enjoy silence for a while.

A holiday doesn't have to be filled with experiences to be memorable. Sometimes it's the quiet hours that stay with you: the first coffee outside the house, rain on the shingle roof, the fire in the wood-burning stove, or a late bath with a view out over the countryside.

These moments cannot be planned. Above all, they need one thing: time that is not already allocated elsewhere.

Not every holiday home is automatically quiet

A private house alone doesn't guarantee relaxation. Decisive factors include the location, distance to other accommodations, the architecture, and the materials from which a place has been created.

If a holiday home is located in a densely built-up complex, pathways, terraces, and recreational areas can be just as busy as in a hotel. Likewise, a large house does not automatically appear calming. Sometimes, a sense of security is created precisely by well-designed rooms, pleasant lighting, and materials that don't need to be showy.

Wood brings warmth and a familiar scent into the room. Clay has a matte, calm surface and can absorb moisture from the room air and release it again later. You can find out more about this in our article on Clay in the bedroom and its effect on the room climate.

Straw remains invisible as an insulating material, yet still helps to keep warmth in the house and summer heat out. Together, these materials create spaces that feel different from smooth, technically-shaped interiors.

At Ebner 1822, the three Natural houses made from wood, straw, and clay erected by hand. Some of the timber comes from its own woodland. The clay walls, the oak floorboards, the timber-framed ceilings and the larch shingles are not subsequently added features. They are integral to the very nature of the houses.

We also describe in the article how natural materials can influence living and relaxing. Experience natural building materials in your holiday home.

Three houses instead of a holiday village

Ebner 1822 is neither a hotel nor a classic chalet village. The estate features three private nature houses, well-spaced from one another. In between, you'll find meadows, a natural pond, fruit trees, and paths that don't necessarily lead to a recreational programme.

There is no lobby, no large spa area, and no entertainment. Instead, each house has its own terrace, a wood-burning stove, a freestanding bathtub with a view, and a Hydrosoft cabin. The natural pond is just a few steps away.

The farm is situated at around 1,000 metres above sea level in the upper Gurk valley. Here, even summer days are often accompanied by pleasantly cool nights. For those who wish to go out, meadows, forests, and the gentle landscape of the Nockberge mountains are found immediately on the doorstep. On other days, perhaps a walk to the jetty will suffice.

Also Farm stay is by no means just for family holidays. Many farms cater to couples and solo travellers looking for nature, peace, regional products and special accommodation. At Ebner 1822, this quiet side of farm holidays is the central focus.

Service, without falling into a hotel routine

The decision between a holiday home and a hotel is often described as a choice between freedom and service. However, the two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Even in a holiday home, you can feel cared for. The difference lies less in the scope than in the type of care. Instead of a large buffet, Ebner 1822 offers a breakfast basket with carefully selected products. Instead of a daily programme of events, you receive personal recommendations for routes, excursions and special places in the surrounding area.

Perhaps the day will lead to a quiet forest path. Perhaps to one of the Carinthian lakes. Perhaps one simply stays at the farm. You can find an overview of destinations and activities with our Leisure activities around Ebner 1822.

Good food is also part of our relaxation. In the certified organic village inn Barbara cooks seasonally and with regional produce. The menu remains deliberately concise. What is currently good and suits the season is served.

So, enjoyment remains part of the day, without forcing it into a rigid schedule.

When a hotel is the better choice

It wouldn't be honest to pit hotels and holiday homes against each other. Both can be the right type of holiday – just for different needs.

A city hotel is suitable if you want museums, restaurants, and culture right on your doorstep. A wellness hotel is ideal for people who want to make saunas, treatments, pools, and an extensive range of amenities the focus of their break. Those who travel alone and are consciously seeking company may also feel more comfortable in a hotel.

A holiday home is particularly suitable if the location itself is intended to be part of the relaxation. If there doesn't need to be something new to do every day. If a view over the meadow, a stroll without a destination, and an evening by the fire mean more than a packed itinerary.

A private house can also be pleasant for a holiday with a dog. At Ebner 1822, dogs are welcome in two of our three houses. Nature begins right on your doorstep and your daily routine can be managed without hotel corridors and shared indoor areas. As our grounds are not fenced and other animals also live on the farm, consideration and a lead are naturally a given.

The most important question before booking

Instead of just asking whether a holiday home or a hotel offers more peace and quiet, a different question is more helpful:

What do I actually want to recover from?

From too many people? From decisions? From noise? From constant availability? Or from a calendar that divides even free time into small segments?

Those yearning above all for relaxation through comprehensive care might find it in a good hotel. Those who want to hear their own rhythm again, however, need a place with distance, privacy, and as few expectations for the day as possible.

Perhaps the most restful journey doesn't begin with a grand itinerary. But with a front door that opens onto a meadow in the morning. With coffee that brews slowly. With a breakfast that has no end time. And with a peace that doesn't need to be sought, because it's already there.
