Autumn in the Nock Mountains – time for peace and retreat

In the morning you already need a jacket, but in the afternoon it is often still comfortably warm in the sun. The first leaves are changing colour, and it is getting quieter on the alpine pastures. For us, autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in the Nock Mountains.

Ebner 1822 sits on a sunny plateau at around 1,000 metres above the upper Gurktal valley. Three nature houses, meadows and woodland all around and a view of the mountains: those looking to spend their autumn holiday in the Nockberge mountains will find a place to retreat with us – and plenty of opportunities to get out and about.

Autumn break in the Nock Mountains: Walking without hurry

The rounded summits of the Nockberge mountains offer far-reaching views. In autumn, the colours are added to the mix: yellow larches, brown alpine meadows and, in between, the dark green of the coniferous forests. However, it doesn't always have to be an extended mountain hike. A walk through the forest or a shorter afternoon stroll can do just as much good. If you don't know in the morning how far you want to go, just start at a leisurely pace. We are happy to provide tips for local routes that suit your fitness level and the weather.

On longer hikes, you should plan for the shorter days. At higher altitudes, it can already get noticeably cold, and not every alpine hut is still open in autumn. Checking the weather forecast and opening times is therefore part of the preparation. Sturdy footwear, warm clothing, something to drink and a snack should be brought along.

Breakfast in one's own home

The breakfast basket is included in our stay. Breakfast is enjoyed in your own nature house – with time for a second cup of coffee and a conversation that isn't already interrupted by the next appointment.

Afterwards you can head out. Or stay a bit longer, open a book and decide later. A free morning doesn't have to be filled immediately just because you're on holiday.

This is what matters to us at Ebner 1822: Much is prepared, but little is prescribed. We are there when our guests need something, while at the same time giving them their own space.

Go outside. Gladly come home again.

After a few hours in the fresh air, you look forward to a warm house. The hiking boots are put aside, a cup of tea on the table. On cool days, the wood-burning stove can be lit; if you like, you can take a bath in the panoramic tub.

Our three natural houses made of wood, straw and clay were created with a lot of manual craftsmanship. Inside, clay walls, oak floorboards and solid wood furniture are a matter of course. When building, it was important to us to use materials that we ourselves enjoy living with.

Especially in autumn, you spend more time indoors again. It makes a difference whether you just have a place to sleep or a whole house to yourself. There is space for reading, for cooking together and for a cosy evening by the fireplace.

And if it does happen to rain, we can always cancel the walk. Then there’ll be time for the book that’s been meant to come along on this trip for ages.

Good food is part of it

If you do not want to cook for yourself every day on holiday, you can in our Village pub Let Barbara cook for you. In her kitchen, the season and the origin of the ingredients play an important role. Our village tavern is organically certified; a high proportion of the food used comes from organic farming.

In autumn, a warm soup goes down particularly well after a hike. Depending on what is available, seasonal vegetables, mushrooms or a braised dish are served. We are happy to discuss what is on offer during your stay with our guests.

The village pub belongs to the farm, so for an evening of good food you no longer need to get in the car. Afterwards, it is just a few steps back to your own house.

You don't have to go on a trip every day to enjoy the autumn here. Sitting by the natural pond, taking a stroll around the courtyard or catching some sun at Ebner Beach – sometimes that's all it takes for a lovely afternoon.

We like this time of year because the two things go well together: being out and about and making yourself cozy indoors afterwards. Without having to think about what else you should be doing every single day.
