Initial thoughts evolved into a long journey: with research, discussions, travels, craftspeople, building biology, old farmhouse forms, and the question of how to build today in a way that benefits people, the landscape, and the location.

These questions have accompanied us for years. From them arose the decision for a natural, diffusion-open construction method using wood, straw, and clay. And from them arose the desire to understand hospitality not as a service programme, but as an attitude.

More about the history and philosophy behind Ebner 1822 can be found here: The idea behind Ebner 1822.

Why healthy building design is more than just sustainability

Sustainable building is often understood in terms of energy, insulation values and CO₂. That's important. But for us, it's about something more fundamental: How does a house feel when you sleep, read, breathe, cook, bathe and relax in it?

A healthy building style begins with the question of which materials surround people daily. At Ebner 1822, these are not smooth, artificial-looking surfaces, but natural building materials with character: wood from their own forest, organic straw for insulation, clay on the walls, lime on the outside, larch on the roof, and handcrafted details reminiscent of old farmhouses.

You can also find out more about our construction method on the page Natural building with clay houses and wood.

Clay

Clay regulates humidity, stores heat, and creates calm, matte surfaces with natural depth.

Bio straw building

Straw is a renewable insulation material and is ideal for natural, vapour-permeable construction.

Wood

Timber from one's own forest brings warmth, origin, and a handcrafted character to natural homes.

Building with diffusion-openness: a house that can breathe

A diffusion-open house is not a house through which the wind blows. The wall is not sealed off with dense layers, but remains physically open in terms of construction.

This is a significant difference compared to many modern construction methods, where films, plastics, and very dense layers play a central role. The sun plateau in the upper Gurk Valley offers clear air, cooler nights in summer, expansive views, and a natural distance from the pace of everyday life.

This is particularly noticeable during the warmer months. While it often gets hot, oppressive, and noisy in cities and low-lying areas, it remains more pleasant up here. The construction methods using clay, straw, and wood contribute to this feeling: the houses don't feel overheated and artificial, but rather balanced and tranquil.

What guests can feel

the smell of wood on arrival

the natural structure of the clay walls

the pleasant warmth of the wood-burning stove

the muted sense of space through natural materials

What makes the place special

clear air at around 1,000 metres above sea level

Private nature houses with space between them

Organic breakfast basket delivered directly to your door

Connection of nature, craftsmanship and retreat

Healthy building styles and enjoyment go hand in hand

For us, healthy building style doesn't stop at the house walls.
